About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Review medical documentation and health information in electronic medical/health systems
Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes according to standard coding guidelines
Identify principal diagnoses, comorbidities/complications, present-on-admission indicators, and appropriate code sequencing
Determine the most appropriate DRG representing each patient stay
Abstract required data elements for reporting and statistical capture
Resolve complex inpatient edits and alerts
Communicate with Clinical Documentation Integrity team members regarding complex clinical scenarios
Translate diagnoses, procedures, and treatment into standardized codes
Collaborate with the CDI team to align clinical and coding approaches
Reference anatomy, physiology, and clinical practice to support code assignment
Identify documentation improvement opportunities and seek clarification from physicians
Enter coded and abstracted information into assigned systems

Requirements

What you’ll need

High school diploma or GED required
Minimum of 3 years’ work experience doing code assignment in a healthcare setting performing similar coding duties required
Registered Health Info Tech, Registered Health Info Admin, Certified Professional Coder, Certified Coding Specialist, or Certified Coding Spec Phys required upon hire
Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding
Knowledge of Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRG) and All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRG)
Knowledge of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), Hierarchical Conditions (HCC), and severity-impacting conditions
Experience reviewing medical documentation and health information
Experience with EPIC (CS-Link), EPIC HB and PB modules, Solventum 360Encompass, Solventum Standalone Encoder, Select Coder, or similar applications
Knowledge of standard coding guidelines
Ability to identify principal diagnoses, comorbidities/complications, present-on-admission indicators, and code sequencing
Ability to resolve complex inpatient edits/alerts
Ability to collaborate with Clinical Documentation Integrity teams and physicians
