About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform all specimen collection procedures and assist Department technical and clerical staff.
  • Obtain blood specimens and collect urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
  • Check test requisitions or computer labels for correctness and completeness before collection and report discrepancies.
  • Verify positive patient identification.
  • Perform venipunctures and finger-sticks using aseptic technique and department procedures.
  • Observe hospital isolation procedures.
  • Ensure specimen requirements are met and maintain specimen integrity.
  • Perform therapeutic drug-monitoring assay collections and verify last dose/date/time with nursing personnel.
  • Initial, date, and time all collections.
  • Accession and process specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Maintain patient comfort and document specimen collection in the LIS.
  • Deliver verified specimens to appropriate areas and order venipuncture collection in the LIS.
  • Perform specimen collection at off-site locations, other healthcare facilities, and hospital-sponsored special programs.
  • Provide specimen collection information to requesting clients.
  • Query the LIS for telephone requests for patient results and document appropriately.
  • Assist with training students and new staff in specimen collection procedures and LIS use.
  • Perform other related duties and special projects assigned by the supervisor or director.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a NAACLS approved phlebotomy program preferred.
  • Phlebotomist certification with ASCP or AMT preferred.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on assigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served.
  • Able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent and/or geriatric patient group.
  • Venipuncture and finger-stick collection using aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge of hospital isolation procedures.
  • Patient identification, specimen labeling, specimen integrity, and LIS documentation.
  • Ability to accession and process specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Ability to maintain competency for assigned procedures.
