About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as the primary legal architect for Cisco’s U.S. benefits programs
- Provide strategic legal frameworks for health, welfare, and retirement programs
- Advise plan committees on ERISA, Internal Revenue Code, fiduciary matters, and governance
- Advise and support plan administration, including filings, offerings, plan documentation, and SPDs
- Review benefits contracts, vendor agreements, and marketing materials
- Lead legal strategy for benefits-related litigation and administrative claims
- Partner with Global Benefits and Finance to identify and mitigate risks
- Drive benefits due diligence and integration strategy for mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures
- Evaluate target company plans, identify liabilities, and support benefits transitions
- Interpret and implement new regulations, including SECURE Act 2.0 and state-mandated retirement or paid leave programs
- Collaborate on cross-functional employment law initiatives
- Report to an Associate General Counsel Director, Employment Law
Requirements
What you’ll need- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school with a strong academic record
- Active member in good standing of at least one U.S. State Bar
- 7+ years of relevant legal experience
- Significant focus on ERISA and US Benefits law within a major law firm or large multinational corporate legal department
- Track record handling benefits litigation
- Experience navigating sophisticated ERISA compliance issues
- Experience providing practical mentorship
- Strong business sense and ability to balance legal risk with Cisco’s innovative culture
- Ability to work independently as a self-starter
- Excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
- Experience in the technology sector or with high-growth, global companies preferred
- Familiarity with AI-powered legal tools preferred
- Familiarity with employment litigation, hiring and termination counseling, and general employment compliance is a plus
