About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead integration of functions, deploy new sanctions screening capabilities, and enhance real-time transaction screening workflows
- Analyze business processes, system processes, and sanctions/regulatory standards to define solutions
- Serve as senior technical expert on sanctions platform architecture for large-budget, cross-functional, and concurrent initiatives
- Develop architectural standards and methodologies for analysis, design, coding, testing, debugging, and implementation
- Apply advanced knowledge across platform areas to achieve technology goals
- Consult with compliance officers, sanctions/AML teams, and business stakeholders on system specifications and design
- Allocate work and coach developers, analysts, and new team members
- Influence senior leaders, compliance stakeholders, and external parties on technical direction
- Assess and manage regulatory, operational, reputational, and control risks
- Design fault-tolerant microservices with 99.99% continuous availability
- Integrate AI/ML for predictive scaling, anomaly detection, self-healing, and false-positive reduction
- Develop high-throughput Kafka-based event-driven screening pipelines
- Ensure engineering practices support sanctions, payments, PCI-DSS, and AML/KYC requirements
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience in enterprise-grade payments, sanctions screening, or financial crime compliance systems
- Subject Matter Expert in Java technologies, including Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and reactive programming frameworks
- Proficiency in Java and Python
- Experience designing resilient microservices architectures using circuit breakers, bulkheads, and active-active replication
- Experience with event-driven and message-based architectures using Apache Kafka or equivalent platforms
- Working knowledge of sanctions screening concepts, watchlist matching engines, fuzzy matching, and false-positive reduction techniques
- Understanding of the payments processing lifecycle and associated risk, fraud, and compliance considerations
- Strong knowledge of Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, and GitHub Actions
- Proficiency with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Oracle, or Redis, including performance tuning, query optimization, and schema design
- Experience leveraging AI tools including GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Devin
- Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, or Splunk
- Strong systems analysis skills
- Ability to informally lead, mentor, and advise engineers without direct people-management responsibility
- Familiarity with OFAC, EU/UN sanctions regimes, PCI-DSS, and AML/KYC transaction monitoring is a plus
- Bachelor's degree/University degree or equivalent experience
- Master's degree preferred
