Key responsibilities & impact

Design, architect, and oversee robust, scalable, and reliable cloud data infrastructure, including data lakes, data warehouses, and real-time streaming platforms
Write clean, maintainable, and high-performance code for data ingestion, transformation, and serving layers using technologies such as Python, Scala, SQL, and Spark
Lead a team of data engineers and provide technical guidance, mentorship, and career development support
Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment
Define, document, and champion data engineering best practices, including CI/CD, data quality, testing frameworks, observability, and code review standards
Partner with leadership, product managers, data scientists, and analysts to develop a long-term data strategy and roadmap
Evaluate, prototype, and recommend new data engineering tools and frameworks
Implement and enforce data governance, security, and privacy policies with security and compliance teams
Build large-scale data systems and serve as a player-coach combining architectural leadership with hands-on development

Requirements

What you’ll need

10+ years of professional experience in data engineering
3+ years in a technical leadership or architect role, with experience mentoring junior and senior engineers
Expert-level proficiency in at least one programming language; Python or Scala preferred
Exceptional SQL skills
Hands-on experience with Python or Scala for data manipulation, scripting, machine learning, and backend development
Deep hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and its data ecosystem
Extensive experience with Hadoop, Hive, Impala, Apache Spark, Kafka, or Flink
Proficiency with Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect
Experience designing and implementing microservices architectures, RESTful APIs, and event-driven systems with a Data as a Product principle
Understanding of data modeling and database design for OLAP and OLTP workloads
Experience with relational databases, NoSQL databases, data warehousing, and big data technologies
Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for data applications
Experience with AI technologies including Microsoft Copilot, Claude Code, and Devin
Advocacy for software engineering best practices and a strong engineering culture
Ability to bridge Business, Technology, and Analytics teams
Experience managing global technology teams
Working knowledge of industry and Citi practices and standards
Clear and concise written and verbal communication
Exceptional communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
Bachelor’s degree/University degree or equivalent experience
