About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Operate trucks and other light equipment and transport crews or materials to work sites
  • Mow rights-of-way and maintain shoulders and roadsides using power hand mowers and tractors with attachments
  • Operate post drivers and install, move, or remove signs, fences, guardrails, and snow fences
  • Apply and remove concrete, bituminous patching, crack filling, sealants, adhesives, paint, and other surfacing materials
  • Perform manual labor and handle hazardous materials required for the work
  • Control traffic around construction and maintenance projects using established safety procedures
  • Set signs and cones around work sites and relay road and weather conditions by two-way radio
  • Move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies, and roadway objects
  • Spread and tamp surfacing materials
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and perform routine repairs on assigned equipment
  • Maintain grounds and buildings of maintenance yards
  • Operate snow removal equipment as needed, during emergencies, and during labor shortages
  • Work with maintenance workers and senior maintenance workers under the direction of a highway maintenance supervisor or crew chief
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required
  • Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior: Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements required within 60 days of employment
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with O Restriction and tanker endorsement required within 90 days of hire through in-house CDL training program
  • Must be able to be placed on-call and respond during non-scheduled work hours, holidays, and weekends for emergencies and special events
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and around high-speed traffic
  • Must report to work for snow and highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions
  • Must obtain CDL with endorsements within 90 days of employment; loss of license may result in termination
  • Some positions may require overnight travel
  • Must safely move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and 90 or more pounds infrequently with assistance
  • Must be able to climb, bend, stoop, and work outdoors in temperature extremes and all weather
  • Must be able to read and communicate effectively, give and receive instructions, and follow directions with minimal supervision
  • Basic computer and arithmetic skills
  • Ability to learn and adjust to new technology and processes
  • Ability to work safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices
  • Experience in operation of heavy equipment preferred
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement preferred
  • Commercial Pesticide applicator's license preferred
  • Basic computer experience preferred
