About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide senior individual-contributor technical leadership at Clara
  • Shape architecture and raise engineering standards across pods
  • Write production code regularly across systems spanning services and shared platforms
  • Drive cross-team system design for APIs, data models, event flows, and reliability patterns
  • Set standards for code quality, testing, observability, and secure design
  • Influence through RFCs, architecture reviews, and pairing
  • Partner with Engineering Directors, Pod Leads, and Product on sequencing, technical debt, and platform investments
  • Mentor Senior and Mid engineers through design reviews and deep pairing
  • Provide input on technical fit and hiring signals
  • Lead or co-lead response and remediation for high-severity incidents
  • Drive durable reliability fixes
  • Author meaningful pull requests and deliver production code
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, leadership, and cross-functional engineering teams
  • Build systems and technical bets that unlock multiple product areas

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial time as a Senior / Lead IC on complex systems
  • Deep expertise in at least one of backend or frontend engineering
  • Backend expertise may include Java, Spring/Spring Boot, microservices, scalable system design, PostgreSQL/MySQL, NoSQL data modeling, Kafka or similar, REST APIs, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Frontend expertise may include React, TypeScript, component architecture, performance, Jest, RTL, Cypress/Playwright, and build/CI tooling
  • Ability to reason full-stack across data models, APIs, and UI
  • Proven experience designing for high availability, security, and operability in production
  • Strong testing culture across unit, integration, and contract testing
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, including GitHub Actions
  • Track record of written technical designs that others can challenge and execute against
  • Demonstrated influence without formal authority across teams and stakeholders
  • Clear communication of trade-offs to Product, Design, and leadership
  • Product mindset focused on roadmaps and feasibility
  • Intellectual honesty and willingness to change direction based on evidence
  • Mentorship instincts
  • Strong English; Spanish is a plus for LATAM collaboration
  • Experience in financial applications, payments, or regulated LATAM markets is nice to have
  • Prior Staff, Principal, Staff-equivalent, or organization-wide Tech Lead experience is nice to have
  • Platform or developer-experience investment experience is nice to have
  • Deep AWS or security posture experience is nice to have
