About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage end-to-end payroll processes via the PEO partner
- Administer the HRIS, maintain employee records, perform data entry, audit data integrity, and configure the system
- Support employees with payroll, timekeeping, tax withholding, and basic HR operations inquiries
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations and labor laws
- Generate HR metrics, payroll summaries, and operational reports
- Identify workflow bottlenecks in onboarding, offboarding, and timekeeping
- Design and implement SOPs to reduce manual data entry and errors
- Lead the transition off the PEO and build an in-house payroll model by January 1, 2028
- Evaluate, select, and assist with implementation of payroll and benefits platforms
- Establish workflows, controls, SOPs, and tax/registration setups across applicable jurisdictions
- Manage change by training managers and staff on new timekeeping and self-service systems
Requirements
What you’ll need- 3–5+ years of experience in payroll and HR operations
- Proven, hands-on experience successfully transitioning an organization off a PEO onto an independent, self-powered payroll system
- Advanced proficiency with HRIS/payroll platforms (e.g., ADP, Rippling, Workday, Gusto)
- Strong Excel skills, including VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, and data audits
- Deep understanding of federal, multi-state, and local tax, wage, and labor regulations
- Excellent analytical and project management skills
- High attention to detail
- Ability to explain complex payroll/benefits topics to employees with empathy and clarity
- Proactive and consistent execution with detail-oriented quality and speed
