About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide critical care services in medical and surgical intensive care units under physician direction
- Conduct admission histories and physicals and ongoing medical management
- Order medications and treatments
- Perform specialized procedures, including central-line and arterial-line insertion, as credentialed and privileged
- Conduct medical histories and physical examinations
- Initiate laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic testing
- Review diagnostic data to establish health status and develop diagnoses and treatment plans
- Perform and interpret routine and specialized diagnostic procedures as credentialed and privileged
- Prescribe and monitor medications as permitted by licensure and policy
- Educate patients about diseases, treatments, and medication side effects and hazards
- Participate in medical team rounds
- Collaborate with nursing, medical, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams
- Refer patients to specialists and specialized resources
- Coordinate continuity of care across multidisciplinary and specialty teams
- Review records and treatment plans for quality monitoring and patient outcomes
- Facilitate length of stay, discharge planning, and regulatory compliance
- Support professional development of the healthcare team
- Promote evidence-based practices, guidelines, and research
- Conduct research studies and assist with data collection and analysis as applicable
- Serve as a clinical preceptor and onboard new caregivers as applicable
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experience as an Acute Care NP or PA in a critical care setting required
- APRN: Graduate of an accredited APRN program
- APRN: MSN required upon hire or within 3 years of hire for applicable external hires and internal hires moving into an APRN role
- PA: Graduate of an A.R.C.-approved Physician Assistant Program
- PA: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies and/or higher degree from a program recognized by the practicing state’s Licensing Board
- Oral and written communication in English
- NP: Currently licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in applicable state(s)
- NP: Must be licensed as an RN in applicable state(s)
- NP: National certification as a Nurse Practitioner by a nationally accredited organization recognized by the State Board of Nursing
- PA: Certification as a Physician Assistant through the NCCPA or successor organization recognized by the practicing state’s Licensing Board
- PA: License to practice and prescribe issued by the practicing state’s Licensing Board
- PA: Current DEA License or DEA designee as required by NCQA
- Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association required
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, or ATLS may be required based on work setting
- NP: Physician arrangements in accordance with applicable State Board of Nursing requirements
- PA: Physician Supervision Agreement and signed addendum
- Credentialing and privileging by the applicable hospitals’ Medical Executive Committee and Governing Body
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrated competency in advanced assessment and diagnosis
- Demonstrated ability to use the electronic medical record
- Critical thinking, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
- Surgical experience may be required in surgical fields
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods
- Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
- Corrected vision and hearing within normal range
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work with potential exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids
- Ability to use required personal protective equipment
