About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide or assist with basic patient care in an outpatient clinic under RN or LIP supervision
  • Complete rooming, including vitals, height, weight, intake questions, documentation and reporting abnormal findings
  • Collect patient specimens, perform point-of-care testing and prepare specimens for laboratory transport
  • Prepare patients for and assist with examinations, tests and procedures, including EKGs, Holter monitors, pulse oximetry, hearing and vision screening, disinfection and sterilization
  • Administer directed treatments, including heat or cold applications, simple sterile dressing changes, and applying or removing casts, braces and splints
  • Review printed instructions with patients
  • Assist with wound care
  • Document patient care in the electronic health record
  • Set up and close the clinic, manage in-baskets, close care gaps, and maintain clean and orderly work areas
  • Stock supplies and linens; clean and monitor expiration dates; restock dressing supply carts; check AED units and oxygen tanks; empty needle boxes using appropriate safety measures
  • Initiate CPR and other emergency measures
  • For the Medical Assistant pathway, perform screenings and treatments, update health-maintenance information, identify medication changes, update allergies, collect specimens, perform tests and document care
  • Monitor and communicate changes in patient condition
  • Administer specified medications under provider direction
  • Maintain equipment, medical supplies and examination areas
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties including filing, reception, scheduling, data entry and patient registration

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or GED for the Outpatient Clinical Care Assistant pathway
  • One year of recent healthcare experience in a hospital or ambulatory, homecare, assisted living, nursing home or long-term care setting
  • Understanding of human anatomy, basic patient care activities and math
  • Additional formal training/education may substitute some or all of the required experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross, required within the new hire period if not already obtained
  • Graduate from an approved medical assisting program OR military training as a hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) for the Medical Assistant pathway
  • Completion of a clinical externship OR extensive clinical experience for the Medical Assistant pathway
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA or American Red Cross for the Medical Assistant pathway; must be obtained during the new hire period if not already held
  • Ability to perform full body motion to move and lift patients, with manual finger dexterity and good eye-hand coordination
  • Ability to stand and walk extensively
  • Ability to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force rarely and/or 0 to 50 pounds occasionally to move objects
  • Must follow standard precautions and use required personal protective equipment
  • Successful controlled-substance testing after an offer
  • Compliance with Cleveland Clinic’s influenza prevention program, including annual vaccination or approved exemption
