About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Work one-on-one with registered nurses in Cleveland Clinic’s hospital system
- Learn from nurse educators and fellow externs in classroom sessions
- Perform basic patient care activities under RN supervision
- Assist with vital signs, weights, personal care, activities of daily living, and patient transfers/transport
- Perform trained and competency-verified skills identified on skills checklists
- Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to an RN
- Assist with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly
- Perform advanced skills such as medication administration and IV therapy under a preceptor when concurrently enrolled in a qualifying school course
- Attend required classes during the 10-week program
- Maintain personal growth and development through formal and informal education
- Demonstrate a positive, concerned, and sensitive workplace response
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Nursing student graduating in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028
- Enrolled in an accredited BSN Nursing school with less than one year until graduating, or an accredited ADN nursing school with less than two classes until graduating
- Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA)
- Ability to read, write and speak English and follow oral and written instructions
- Good interpersonal skills to interact with patients and staff
- Ability to perform basic mathematics
- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
- Ability to perform full body motion to move and lift patients, with manual finger dexterity and good eye-hand coordination
- Ability to perform extensive standing and walking
- Ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly
- Compliance with standard precautions and required personal protective equipment
- Successful controlled-substance testing following an employment offer
- Compliance with the influenza prevention program, including annual vaccination or approved exemption
