About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide 24/7 coverage, including day and night shifts
- Conduct patient evaluations, histories, physical examinations, and advanced assessments
- Respond to rapid responses, codes, stroke alerts, and ICU admissions
- Perform urgent and specialized procedures, including airway management, blood draws, IV starts, intubation, arterial lines, central venous catheters, chest tubes, and ventilator management
- Initiate and interpret laboratory, radiology, cardiographic, and other diagnostic tests
- Establish working diagnoses and treatment plans
- Manage hospitalized patients across all services as the critical care house officer
- Provide rapid, short-term intervention to address immediate patient issues
- Communicate and coordinate continuously with providers and multidisciplinary care teams
- Provide patient and family education regarding diseases, treatments, medications, prevention, and health maintenance
- Ensure continuity of care and conduct handoffs to the admitting service
- Refer patients to specialists when appropriate
- Participate in medical team rounds
- Develop and implement nursing components of care plans where appropriate
- Serve as a clinical preceptor for PA/APRN students and other health professionals when needed
- Support onboarding and faculty activities for new employees when needed
- Complete 3–4 months of paid training before beginning duties at each hospital
- Work approximately 13 13-hour shifts per month, including rotating nights, weekends, holidays, and one 13-hour call shift per month
Requirements
What you’ll need- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner experience preferred; candidates with at least 3 years of critical care RN experience will be considered
- MSN required upon hire or within 3 years of hire for applicable external hires and internal hires moving to an APN role
- Eligible to sit for national graduate nursing certification exam leading to a certificate of authority in the state of employment
- Graduate of an accredited MSN/ACNP/AG-ACNP training program
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the applicable state
- National APRN certification from a nationally accredited organization recognized by the state Board of Nursing
- Current applicable state Board of Nursing licensure, including certificate to prescribe if applicable
- Must have prescriptive authority or be eligible to apply for prescribing licensure within the first 6 months of hiring
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association required
- Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS), Fundamental Critical Care Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support preferred
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform advanced assessment and diagnosis
- Critical thinking, decisive judgment, and ability to work autonomously
- Ability to lead critical situations as the sole provider in the hospital
- Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
- Two years of clinical advanced practice nursing experience preferred
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods, with manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
- Corrected vision and hearing within normal range
- Occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
- May be exposed to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids
- Must comply with annual influenza vaccination or approved exemption
- Offers are followed by controlled-substance testing
