About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide or assist with patient care in an outpatient clinic under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Independent Provider
  • Complete rooming processes, including vital signs, height, weight, intake questions, documentation and reporting abnormal findings
  • Collect specimens, perform point-of-care testing and prepare specimens for laboratory transport
  • Prepare patients for and assist with exams, tests and procedures, including EKG, Holter monitor application, pulse oximetry, hearing and vision screening, disinfection and sterilization
  • Administer directed treatments, including heat or cold applications, simple sterile dressing changes, and applying or removing casts, braces and splints
  • Review printed instructions with patients and assist with wound care
  • Document patient care in the electronic health record
  • Set up and close the clinic, manage in-baskets, close care gaps, and maintain clean and orderly work areas
  • Stock supplies and linens; clean equipment, monitor expiration dates, restock dressing supply carts, check AED units and oxygen tanks, and empty needle boxes using appropriate safety measures
  • Initiate CPR and other emergency measures
  • Perform screenings and treatments, gather and update health-maintenance information, identify medication changes, update allergy information, collect specimens, perform tests and document patient care
  • Monitor and communicate changes in patient condition
  • Administer specific medications under provider direction
  • Maintain equipment, medical supplies and examination areas
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties including filing, reception, scheduling, data entry and patient registration
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff and interdisciplinary teams

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or GED (Outpatient Clinical Care Assistant)
  • One year of recent healthcare experience in a hospital or ambulatory, homecare, assisted living, nursing home or long-term care setting
  • Understanding of human anatomy, basic patient care activities and math
  • Additional formal training/education may substitute some or all of the required experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross, required within the new hire period if not already obtained
  • Graduate from an approved medical assisting program or military training as a hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) (Medical Assistant)
  • Completion of a clinical externship or extensive clinical experience (Medical Assistant)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (Medical Assistant); must be obtained during the new hire period if not held
  • Ability to perform full body motion, move and lift patients, and stand and walk extensively
  • Ability to exert up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently
  • Compliance with required personal protective equipment and standard precautions
  • Successful controlled-substance testing after an offer of employment
  • Compliance with annual influenza vaccination program or approved exemption
