About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own delivery and team health for Feature Management
- Steer technical decisions through questions while allowing engineers to own architecture
- Give feedback in the moment
- Hire, grow, and address performance issues
- Remove unnecessary processes
- Use AI agents to gather team and delivery information, including PTO, PR lead time, ticket attention, shipped work, and incidents
- Manage a distributed team spanning three continents and approximately ten time zones
- Do not write code, approve every pull request, or attend every incident call
Requirements
What you’ll need- At least 5 years as a software developer before moving into management (ideally, developed in Go)
- 5+ years as an actual engineering manager
- Managed 5 or more direct reports at once
- Track record of improving automation and developer tooling
- Technical background in CI/CD, feature flagging, or platform engineering
- Experience managing engineers who are better coders than the manager
- Experience running distributed, multi-timezone teams
- Knowledge of deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, and time to restore
- Recent, hands-on use of at least one coding agent (Claude Code, Gemini, Cursor, Kiro, or similar)
- Experience taking over a team mid-transition
- Prior exposure to release orchestration (nice to have)
- Java development experience (nice to have)
