About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Support end-to-end server product qualification from concept to deployment
Help optimize electrical, thermal, and mechanical hardware designs for large-scale Infrastructure Operations deployment
Gather product requirements for next-generation servers
Work with silicon vendors to assess performance and select CPUs, memory, disks, NICs, GPUs, and other components
Collaborate with strategy, sourcing, and capacity planning teams on server infrastructure initiatives
Work with Site Reliability Engineering to onboard and integrate next-generation servers into provisioning and fleet management tools
Collaborate with performance and software teams to optimize software performance on hardware
Help deploy firmware updates, triage hardware problem reports, resolve hardware issues, and maintain automation tools
Communicate results and updates through blog posts and internal talks
Design, qualify, and maintain Cloudflare’s worldwide server fleet

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science
Foundational knowledge or internship/academic experience with compute design engineering, validation, performance benchmarking, debugging, and deployment used in the data center
Curiosity and desire to learn about Cloudflare hardware and products
Desire to learn how a diverse server fleet is managed at scale with traffic management, capacity planning, and failover mechanisms
Desire to learn Cloudflare tools used to maintain and monitor hardware
Ability to harness AI tools and automation to accelerate the qualification lifecycle
Organizational skills and interest in managing cross-functional technical projects
Ability to work in ambiguous environments with a strong bias for action and limited supervision
Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science is a bonus
Knowledge of server hardware, motherboard, chassis, and thermal designs; CPU, memory, and storage technology is a bonus
Knowledge of bash, Python, and basic Linux task automation is a bonus
Knowledge of Redfish, IPMI, server remote management protocols, and firmware updates is a bonus
Knowledge or experience of hardware/software co-design performance optimization is a bonus
Knowledge and experience debugging server hardware faults and working with sourcing teams and vendors is a bonus
Experience working with external vendors on server hardware qualification is a bonus
Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Git, TeamCity, and Jira is a bonus
Experience in a hyperscale cloud infrastructure role is valuable
Offer may be conditioned on authorization to receive technology controlled under U.S. export laws without sponsorship for an export license
