About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the design, evolution, and operational excellence of Cloudflare’s global network infrastructure
- Own foundational decisions for network growth, including capacity planning methodologies, hardware evolution strategies, and architectural standards
- Shape network architecture, strategies, and long-term roadmaps
- Design and evolve global network architecture, including core infrastructure patterns, interconnection strategies, and edge deployment models
- Establish and maintain design standards for consistency, reliability, and defensibility
- Lead architectural reviews and recommend major evolution initiatives
- Own and improve capacity management processes and systems
- Develop demand forecasting, growth modeling, and resource utilization methodologies
- Build tools, dashboards, and automated capacity-planning systems
- Drive network hardware and platform strategy evolution
- Evaluate platforms, vendors, architectures, silicon, switching architectures, routing protocols, and optical transport
- Work with procurement, supply chain, and engineering teams on next-generation platform transitions
- Conceive multi-year network infrastructure roadmaps and research emerging trends
- Lead architectural exploration and validation projects
- Partner with infrastructure teams to implement architectural visions
- Collaborate with finance and operations to understand costs and optimize infrastructure spend
- Mentor engineering teams and elevate technical decision-making across the organization
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years designing, operating, or planning large-scale network infrastructure at hyperscale or equivalent
- Proven track record building greenfield network architectures and evolving them as business needs change
- Deep, hands-on expertise with BGP, ISIS, RSVP-TE, QoS, and traffic engineering
- Strong experience with software-defined networking, overlay networks, and programmable forwarding
- Expert-level understanding of network economics, cost drivers, capacity planning, peering strategy, performance, redundancy, and capital efficiency
- Track record automating complex network operations and building extensible frameworks at scale
- Experience designing and implementing DDoS mitigation strategies, firewall policies, and network security at scale
- Ability to design intent-based systems
- Strong systems-level understanding across hardware platforms, protocols, software-defined networking, and application-level routing
- Experience leading network design, planning, budgeting, and sourcing decisions for large deployments
- Ability to think 3–5 years ahead while shipping solutions today
- Ability to influence without direct authority and present technical recommendations to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong writing and documentation skills
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading teams through major architectural transitions
- Comfortable working in a matrix environment with product, operations, procurement, and finance stakeholders
