About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Directly manage, schedule, and balance workload across a team of import operators
  • Hire, onboard, and train new operators; build a structured ramp-up process
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide coaching, and manage corrective action when needed
  • Serve as escalation point for complex files, difficult customers, and carrier/agent disputes
  • Build team morale and accountability within the import department
  • Oversee end-to-end execution of air and ocean import shipments from file opening through final delivery
  • Review and approve high-risk, high-value, or non-routine import files
  • Monitor shipment milestones and resolve exceptions and delays
  • Ensure accuracy of entries, bills of lading, delivery orders, and invoicing
  • Maintain and improve department SOPs
  • Keep the team current on regulatory changes affecting import processes
  • Complete compliance audits
  • Own client import-book profitability, file-level margins, and department P&L
  • Manage timely and accurate A/R and A/P billing
  • Improve efficiency and reduce costs without compromising service
  • Manage cost procurement and markup strategy with sales input
  • Act as senior contact for key accounts on import-related issues
  • Maintain relationships with overseas agents, carriers, and customs brokers
  • Ensure proactive client communication on shipment status
  • Enhance the Import department’s use of CargoWise with the Director of Compliance
  • Assist with IT solutions, new system implementation, and continuous process improvement
  • Identify, develop, implement, and oversee new products

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • At least 5 years of experience in international freight forwarding, with meaningful time in import operations specifically
  • Prior supervisory or team-lead experience — direct people management, not just operational ownership
  • Experience with performance reviews
  • Strong working knowledge of import and INCOTERMS
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with CargoWise is preferred, but not required
  • Experience managing departmental P&L or profitability reporting is preferred, but not required
  • Background in both air and ocean import modes, particularly FCL, is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with cost, vendor, and carrier sourcing is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with rate management and quoting is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with Ocean Contracts is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with Client routed freight and Agent routed freight is preferred, but not required
