About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide 1:1 monitoring with continuous visual observation, either in person or via video monitor
  • Support adult or pediatric behavioral health patients and patients at risk for suicide, falls, altered mental status, or delirium
  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment for patients at risk of harming themselves or with altered mental status
  • Identify risks and promptly alert the healthcare team for early intervention
  • Remain with assigned patients until relieved and never leave them unattended unless directed by the nurse
  • Document pertinent information and care provided
  • Adhere to hospital policies regarding alarms, fall prevention, delirium, safe patient handling, infection prevention, and confidentiality
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team and participate in continuous quality improvement
  • Assist with patient meal trays, ordering meals, eating, mobility, ambulation, and bathroom assistance as appropriate
  • Communicate respectfully with patients and significant others
  • Orient patients and/or significant others to the situation and surroundings
  • Report observations of patients' physical, social, and mental status to the RN
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with patients
  • Ensure continuous supervision and refrain from using cell phones, laptops, books, and similar items while observing patients

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • American Heart Association Heart Saver within 6 months of hire
  • Management of Aggressive Behavior within 6 months of hire
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Available to work day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts
  • Ability to perform as a team member and effective communicator
  • Ability to provide continuous visual observation and supervision
  • Ability to identify risks such as falls or self-harm and promptly alert the team
  • Ability to recognize a patient emergency and respond appropriately
  • Ability to assist with ambulation and mobilization activities
  • Ability to lift, carry, or push/pull specified weights and perform required physical activities
  • Ability to work around airborne pathogens, bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and other workplace hazards
