About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide diagnostic and rehabilitative services to pediatric patients in acute-care and outpatient settings
- Screen, identify, diagnose, intervene, and follow up on articulation, fluency, voice, language, communication, swallowing, cognitive-communication, and social-communication disorders
- Support and consult with professionals, family members, and communication partners; make referrals when appropriate
- Select, fit, and establish effective use of prosthetic and adaptive speaking and swallowing devices, including AAC devices and speaking valves
- Use videofluoroscopy, nasendoscopy, ultrasonography, stroboscopy, and other instrument technology to diagnose and treat communication and swallowing disorders
- Provide aural rehabilitation and related counseling for individuals with hearing loss and their families
- Partner with front office and management to secure insurance authorization
- Prepare timely written reports for physicians, families, and insurance providers
- Monitor and support patient and family attendance policies
- Measure departmental contributions through productivity and performance accountabilities
- Measure treatment outcomes and continuously evaluate practices and programs to improve service quality
- Engage in evidence-based practice activities
- Participate in chart reviews and environmental rounds
- Apply age-related patient knowledge from neonates through adolescence and demonstrate cultural sensitivity
- Support the organization’s mission, values, goals, and Core Behaviors
- Supervise graduate students or Clinical Fellows
Requirements
What you’ll need- State of Connecticut Speech Pathologist License required, or eligibility with license required within 45 days, or a documented plan for supervised professional experience approved by the Connecticut Department of Public Health leading to licensure, with license required within one year
- Current Certificate of Clinical Competency issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association within one year of hire
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification for adults, children, and infants within 6 months of hire
- Knowledge of theories, principles, techniques, and practices of professional speech-language pathology
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT medical billing codes
- Knowledge of HIPAA and medical-record confidentiality requirements
- Beginner to intermediate word-processing proficiency
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and other providers
- Ability to follow routine verbal or written instructions
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
- Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions
- Ability to supervise and train new employees and students
- Ability to organize resources and establish priorities
- Ability to work within the collaborative framework of interdisciplinary patient care
- Ability to analyze and solve complex problems
