About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Set technical direction, own system architecture, lead design reviews, and make build, buy, and integration decisions
- Shape architecture across pods, including shared services, data models, integration patterns, and platform capabilities
- Write production code, solve difficult technical problems, and ship alongside the team
- Work with Sales, Clinical, and Operations stakeholders to understand workflows and translate business problems into technical strategy and sequenced plans
- Drive the mobile-first member experience
- Partner with the product manager and engineering managers on quarterly goals, metrics, roadmap tradeoffs, and prioritization
- Define and evolve team practices for AI coding agents, including instructions, specifications, acceptance criteria, testing, CI quality gates, and review standards for patient data, clinical logic, and billing changes
- Lead AI-powered product feature design, including model selection, structured outputs, evaluations, fallback behavior, and quality, latency, and cost monitoring
- Set reliability and safety standards, including SLOs, observability, incident response, audit trails, feature flags, progressive rollouts, and end-to-end data accuracy
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response
- Lead complex multi-system initiatives, including third-party integrations, data flows, and platform migrations, from design through rollout
- Mentor engineers through design feedback and code review, and help develop pod leads and future Staff engineers
- Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and risks to engineers, stakeholders, and leadership
Requirements
What you’ll need- Extensive experience building production software across frontend and backend
- Track record of shipping user-facing features and shaping scope
- Clear communication with non-engineers and comfort working directly with internal teams
- Strong system design skills covering data modeling, APIs, failure handling, observability, reliability, and security by design
- Regular use of AI coding assistants with judgment about their limitations
- US-based due to work with protected health information
- 10+ years of professional software development experience, including designing, building, and operating cloud-based production systems end to end
- Experience setting technical direction as an individual contributor for one or multiple teams
- Deep system design experience across services, APIs, data models, event-driven workflows, and third-party integrations
- Hands-on leadership adopting AI coding agents on production codebases
- Experience shipping and operating LLM-powered features in production, including evals and fallback behavior
- Experience with prompt and context management, versioned prompts, retries, timeouts, fallbacks, and privacy-preserving logging
- Experience handling sensitive data securely, including access controls, encryption, and audit logging
- Experience in a startup or similarly fast-moving environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- Strong frontend and backend experience, including deeper expertise in at least one area
- Experience with React and production-grade web applications
- Experience with Go, Java with Spring Boot, or a comparable backend language and framework
- Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, and API Gateway
- Experience with MongoDB and Redis or comparable data stores
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with infrastructure as code such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or AWS CDK
- Experience with logging, monitoring, alerting, and observability tooling
- Experience with LLM provider APIs, structured outputs, function calling, tool use, streaming, rate limits, timeouts, provider errors, eval suites, tracing, and production monitoring
- Experience with AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex, plus automated tests, typed interfaces, static analysis, and CI quality gates
