About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as an ambassador to the birding community and foster participation in Cornell Lab projects
  • Build and maintain relationships with birders, field videographers, ornithologists, and community leaders worldwide
  • Recruit, support, and train contributors providing video content to the Macaulay Library archive
  • Develop regional expert networks supporting Merlin’s global growth
  • Provide day-to-day support to global partners and contributors
  • Gather community feedback and translate user needs into product improvements
  • Manage collection, organization, annotation, and quality review of bird video content
  • Ensure species identifications are accurate and taxonomically current across large datasets
  • Collaborate with machine learning engineers and product teams to prepare training and evaluation datasets for Merlin’s video models
  • Partner with software engineers, project managers, and outreach teams to test and improve Merlin tools
  • Participate in software testing, troubleshooting, and release coordination
  • Deliver trainings, presentations, and educational resources

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience in biology, ecology, business, information science, or related field, or equivalent combination working in birding, outreach, conservation, ornithology, or related field
  • Deep understanding of birds, birding community, and outdoor community
  • Experience watching birds and working on projects advancing birdwatching and bird conservation
  • Advanced field identification skills by sight and sound of thousands of bird species
  • Ability to identify birds to age/sex and subspecies
  • Understanding of geographic variation, migration, bird behavior, and avian taxonomy
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and relationship-management skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Familiarity with software development and testing processes
  • Extensive experience using and contributing data to eBird, Merlin, and the Macaulay Library
  • Experience filming, photographing, and recording audio of birds in the wild
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to travel to remote field locations and carry heavy equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport and driver’s license
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing
  • Ability to prioritize activities and exercise sound judgement
  • Experience working in remote or challenging field conditions preferred
  • Experience collaborating with software engineering teams preferred
  • Technical project management experience preferred
