About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead end-to-end journey design by mapping complex user flows, wireframes, and digital interaction touchpoints
  • Create and iterate low-to-high fidelity interactive prototypes to test hypotheses and refine interaction models
  • Ensure digital touchpoints comply with WCAG 2.2 AA standards and support inclusive access
  • Champion established design systems such as the GOV.UK Design System and develop reusable UI patterns
  • Collaborate with User Researchers, Content Designers, Performance Analysts, software engineers, policy leads, and product managers
  • Translate regulatory and backend constraints into human-centred solutions
  • Facilitate design critiques, co-design sessions, and cross-functional alignment workshops
  • Provide design leadership across Discovery, Alpha, Beta, and Live phases
  • Report directly to the Head of UCD
  • Take over line management of contractors assigned to the same programme of work
  • Lead and guide contract team members, manage performance, and support staff development through regular feedback
  • Act as a driving force in GCA’s growing UCD team designing complex, high-impact government procurement transactional services

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Extensive track record of designing complex, intuitive user journeys and interfaces within an Agile delivery environment
  • Demonstrated capability creating low-to-high fidelity interactive prototypes using Figma, HTML/CSS, or design toolkits
  • Deep knowledge and practical application of inclusive design principles and WCAG 2.2 standards
  • Experience ensuring products work for users of assistive technology
  • Track record using user research, data, and usability testing to support design decisions
  • Ability to influence project direction and team outcomes and build consensus among diverse stakeholders and delivery squads
  • Success Profiles behaviours: Delivering at pace; Communicating and influencing; Making effective decisions
  • Technical capability in Designing for everyone, Design communication, and Evidence-based design
  • External applicants are eligible for Liverpool, Newport, Norwich, Glasgow, or Birmingham; London, Bristol, Manchester, and York are restricted to contracted GCA staff already based in those offices
