About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work on the Smartly Payroll System, a SaaS online payroll product serving more than 20,000 clients
  • Own day-to-day delivery of assigned work, including clarifying feature-level ambiguity, managing tasks, supporting releases, and verifying production outcomes
  • Contribute realistic effort estimates, raise risks and blockers early, communicate progress, and help the team deliver predictably
  • Contribute to software quality through testing, code reviews, safe change practices, and attention to correctness, maintainability, security, and performance
  • Use modern tooling, automation, and AI-assisted development to improve delivery efficiency, feedback loops, and code quality
  • Support less experienced engineers through collaboration, review feedback, and strong engineering practices
  • Build products and help shape payroll and people management software in New Zealand

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 2+ years’ experience working on IT projects across multiple phases of the SDLC
  • Recent C# .NET experience with at least 2 years of .NET development
  • Experience with web front-end technologies, including HTML, JavaScript, CSS, React, or ASP.NET Razor
  • Good understanding of software architecture, design patterns, SOLID principles, and object-oriented programming
  • Knowledge of software configuration management using tools such as Git
  • Familiarity with service-oriented frameworks
  • Ability to implement features, unit tests, and fix complex bugs
  • Excellent communication skills, with a strong focus on helping create cohesive, collaborative, and productive teams
  • Strong problem-solving and conceptual thinking skills
  • Public cloud exposure (Azure) is a bonus
