About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Review medical record documentation to abstract and assign diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers for statistical classification and reimbursement
  • Perform coding assignments under the direction of Coding Management
  • Provide feedback regarding documentation and coding issues
  • Use software applications and coding references to perform coding-related tasks
  • Maintain compliance with Official Coding Guidelines
  • Code inpatient accounts, including ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, PCS, and DRG coding
  • Write physician queries
  • Code complex inpatient, observation, surgical, and procedural areas
  • Perform ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and CPT procedure coding
  • Meet or exceed coding productivity, accuracy, and timeliness standards
  • Submit a complete and accurate weekly production log
  • Participate in coder and provider education and documentation improvement efforts
  • Interact with providers, nursing staff, and assigned departments
  • Assist with training and quality assurance for all coding levels
  • Complete required coding training and assigned coding instruction
  • Participate in departmental coding and educational meetings and roundtables
  • Follow departmental and Denver Health procedures and directions from Coding Management
  • Maintain patient-information confidentiality
  • Work as a member of the coding team and support unit cohesion

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program required
  • Five years medical coding with multi-specialty experience or specialty certification required
  • Two years’ experience in an academic setting required
  • Proficiency in all major specialties required
  • Strong procedural coding required
  • Experience reviewing DRG assignment required
  • CCS-Certified Coding Specialist certification required
  • Advanced knowledge of coding and compliance, including hospital-based teaching physician guidelines
  • Knowledge of encoder and data abstraction software
  • Strong knowledge of billing and reimbursement
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Critical-thinking ability
  • Ability to read and interpret coding guidelines and make coding decisions
  • Knowledge of researching coding-related topics and issues
  • Ability to give professional presentations
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced environment and be a positive role model
  • Must pass a coding proficiency pre-hire test with 85% accuracy or higher
  • Good computer keyboarding skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Epic experience helpful
  • Encoder experience helpful
