About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform dental hygiene assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for dental hygiene services
- Provide preventive dentistry
- Complete non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT)
- Take digital radiographs for diagnosing periodontal conditions and identifying dental abnormalities
- Complete oral cancer screenings
- Take intraoral images when indicated for referral and follow-up
- Complete a Caries Risk Assessment on all patients
- Complete patient care notes within 72 hours of registration
- Assist with sterile processing preparation
- Fill in at other community dental clinics, Medical-Dental Integration programs, or school-based programs as needed
- Complete preventative prophylaxis cleanings and periodontal maintenance treatment
- Provide oral hygiene instruction, fluoride application, and dental sealant placement
- Prescribe therapeutic agents within scope in collaboration with an attending dentist
- Administer injectable local anesthetic when indicated under indirect supervision
- Apply silver diamine fluoride (SDF) when certified
- Place Interim Therapeutic Restorations (ITR) with required certification and state permit after supervising-dentist prescription
- Complete medical and dental histories and take vital signs when indicated
- Ensure patients' periodontal and dental exams are up to date
- Administer nitrous oxide under direct supervision according to the dental practice act when applicable
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate's Degree Associate in Dental Hygiene Required
- 1-3 years direct clinical practice required, or recent graduation from an accredited Dental Hygiene program required
- Dental Hygienist license from DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies required
- BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) from AHA - American Heart Association required
- LOCAL-Local Anesthesia certification from the State Board of Dentistry required
- Knowledge of dental hygiene procedures and techniques, including dental hygiene diagnosis, oral health screenings, oral cancer screening, oral-systemic health education, fluoride treatment, dental sealants, prophylactic cleanings, and NSPT (scaling and root planning)
- Critical thinking skills for determining when referrals are needed
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices
- Willingness to provide LGBTQ+ affirming and culturally diverse healthcare
- Knowledge of motivational interviewing practices
- Ability to conduct effective coaching conversations with patients and families
- Appropriate certification for prescribing and applying silver diamine fluoride (SDF)
- Appropriate DORA permit for placing interim therapeutic restorations (ITR)
- Compliance with Dental Practice Act continuing education requirements
- Knowledge of ALARA principles for prescribing and capturing dental radiographs
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test for safety-sensitive positions
