About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide direct patient care for new and return patients in person and virtually, including triage, physical exams, data collection, documentation, and care coordination
- Develop individualized screening and risk-reduction plans for high-risk breast patients
- Monitor patients for changes in risk status, clinical changes, and genetic updates
- Counsel and educate patients on breast cancer risk and management recommendations
- Interpret genetic test results and communicate findings to patients and care teams
- Apply hereditary cancer guidelines and evidence-based practices
- Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including skin punch biopsies
- Order imaging, laboratory studies, and professional consultations
- Conduct pre-authorizations for recommended studies
- Prescribe appropriate interventions and risk-reducing medications
- Follow up on test results and coordinate ongoing care, including imaging and pathology results
- Conduct timely e-communication consultations from referring providers
- Communicate pertinent patient information to physicians, referring providers, nursing staff, patient resource managers, and other healthcare providers
- Document patient data, test results, laboratory results, conditions, treatment responses, and colleague communications in the electronic medical record
- Provide outpatient clinic care without inpatient, after-hours call, or operating-room responsibilities
- Participate in trainee education and team-member orientation
- Pursue continuing education in breast cancer risk
- Demonstrate professionalism, customer service, communication, critical thinking, resource utilization, and problem-solving
Requirements
What you’ll need- Nurse Practitioners: completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a master’s degree in nursing
- Physician Assistants: completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program; bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree strongly preferred
- BLS required
- Nurse Practitioners: current or compact RN licensure and NP approval to practice in North Carolina
- Nurse Practitioners: national certification as an NP required
- Physician Assistants: licensed in North Carolina
- Physician Assistants: certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
- APP experience preferred
- Experience in a high-risk breast clinic or cancer genetics preferred
- Experience in a breast surgery clinic and/or hereditary cancer clinic favored
- Ability to provide direct patient care, conduct examinations and procedures, order studies, prescribe medications, interpret genetic test results, and document in the electronic medical record
- Working knowledge of hereditary cancer guidelines and evidence-based clinical practice
- Primary availability Monday through Friday, day shift, with flexibility to meet clinic needs
