About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct patient care as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Perform routine administrative and patient-care supportive duties in a medical practice
  • Assist medical and nursing staff with examination and treatment of patients
  • Answer telephones and greet patients
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Complete insurance forms and handle correspondence
  • Schedule appointments and arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs
  • Explain treatment procedures and prepare patients for examinations and procedures
  • Assist physicians during examinations and procedures
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments
  • Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and involvement in the plan of care; document in patient records
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician
  • Authorize drug refills and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy
  • Draw blood and prepare patients for x-rays, tests, and procedures
  • Take electrocardiograms
  • Remove sutures and staples
  • Change sterile and non-sterile dressings
  • Help ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school or GED graduation required
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required
  • BLS required
  • Level I: No experience required
  • Level II: At least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting
  • Level III: At least 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting
  • 1 year of experience will be provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred for Level I
  • Graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited medical assistant program strongly preferred for Levels II and III
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting and transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques, special procedures, routine and special patient treatments, sanitation, hygiene, health and safety precautions, and infection control
  • Age-specific competencies
  • Knowledge of clinic preparation, registration, scheduling, charge posting, order entry, documentation, communication, typing, and medical terminology
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff
  • Levels II and III: Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
