Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct patient care as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Perform routine administrative and patient-care supportive duties in a medical practice
  • Assist medical and nursing staff with patient examinations and treatments
  • Ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly
  • Answer telephones and greet patients
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Complete insurance forms and handle correspondence
  • Schedule appointments
  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs
  • Explain treatment procedures and prepare patients for examinations and procedures
  • Assist physicians during examinations and procedures
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic on-site laboratory tests
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments
  • Promote patient/family understanding of educational content and participation in the plan of care; document in patient records
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician
  • Authorize drug refills and telephone prescriptions to pharmacies
  • Draw blood and prepare patients for X-rays, tests, and procedures
  • Take electrocardiograms
  • Remove sutures/staples
  • Change sterile and non-sterile dressings

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school or GED graduation required
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required
  • BLS required
  • Level II: At least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting
  • Level III: At least 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting
  • One year of experience will be provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred
  • Level II/III: Medical assistant program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES strongly preferred
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques, special procedures, routine and special patient treatments, sanitation, hygiene, health and safety precautions, and infection control
  • Age-specific competencies
  • Knowledge of clinic preparation, registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information
  • Typing skills
  • Medical terminology
  • Heavy lifting and ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required
  • Levels II and III: Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
