About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Collect medical histories and monitor vital signs
- Explain treatments to patients and prepare them for exams and procedures
- Assist medical staff with patient care
- Gather and prepare lab samples and conduct basic lab tests
- Perform EKGs, remove sutures/staples, and change dressings
- Educate patients and families about care and document in medical records
- Dispose of contaminated supplies, process instruments, and clean medical equipment
- Call in prescriptions, prepare and administer medications as instructed by the doctor, and handle prescription refills
- Perform other clinical tasks assigned by the doctor
- Greet patients, answer calls, schedule appointments, check out patients, and handle referral scheduling
- Coordinate hospital admissions and lab services and update medical records
- Complete forms, receive copays, collect balances, handle correspondence, and order supplies
- Assist with clinic activities such as Joint Commission or fall prevention efforts and participate in clinic committees
Requirements
What you’ll need- Certified Medical Assistant certification required prior to beginning position
- High school or GED graduation required
- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required
- BLS required
- Level I: No experience required
- Level II: At least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting
- Level III: At least 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting
- Level II and III applicants must meet all requirements in the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program document
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred
- For Levels II and III, graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited medical assistant program strongly preferred
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to lift heavy items and assist with transporting patients in stretchers or wheelchairs
- Knowledge of sterile techniques, sanitation, personal hygiene, health and safety, infection control, and age-specific safety measures
- Familiarity with routine and special patient treatment procedures
- Ability to perform registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry
- Clear documentation and communication skills
- Typing skills and medical terminology knowledge for Levels II and III
- Ability to independently seek resources and work collaboratively
