About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build and extend payment flows, including new payment methods, partner integrations, and improvements to customer payments at venues
- Investigate payment failures, fix root causes, and improve reliability and observability
- Ensure every venue is settled correctly in every cycle and market
- Build and extend billing for invoicing, fees, tax, and collections
- Work with Finance to reconcile money end to end and fix mismatches
- Replace manual processes and support tickets with product features
- Review code and protect financial correctness with tests
- Mentor the squad’s mid-level engineer
- Deliver payment flow improvements from first commit to production
- Integrate new payment partners and markets
- Improve payment reliability and observability
- Rebuild billing so fees, adjustments, and tax are handled consistently
- Automate collections for overdue invoices
- Build reconciliation tooling tracing transactions from payment to invoice to payout
- Collaborate with the staff engineer, Finance, Customer Support, and the engineering squad
Requirements
What you’ll need- At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years building production payments, billing or other systems where correctness is measured in cents
- Working knowledge of card payments, including authorization, capture, refunds, settlement, and failure modes
- Hands-on experience integrating with a modern payment provider such as Stripe
- Experience building or operating billing and invoicing systems, including tax and collections
- Understanding of ledgers, double-entry accounting, and reconciliation
- Strong backend engineering in a modern language on cloud infrastructure
- Thorough testing of financial logic
- Track record of delivering significant projects end-to-end in production
- Experience debugging intermittent production issues to root cause and preventing recurrence
- Ability to work with Finance and Customer Support and translate problems into system changes
- Fluency with AI development tools and judgment about where they help and mislead
- Experience at a fintech, payments company, or marketplace that settles money to merchants or venues
- Familiarity with acquirer and bank integrations or payment schemes in Australia, the UK, or New Zealand
- Familiarity with GST/VAT and e-invoicing across Australia, the UK, and New Zealand
- Experience with a serverless AWS stack and event-driven systems
- Exposure to PCI DSS, ISO 27001, or financial audit requirements
- Experience in hospitality tech, or a love of restaurants and dining out
