About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Shape the technical direction and roadmap of EatClub's payments platform across Australia, the UK and New Zealand
- Lead design of complex and consequential payment problems
- Represent the squad in technical discussions with payment partners, acquirers and card schemes
- Apply external payments-industry best practices
- Strengthen platform reliability, risk and compliance
- Write production code for consequential changes and review other code
- Advise the CPTO and tech lead on future payments capability
- Establish documented payment-process source of truth
- Improve payment approval rates, reliability and customer experience
- Strengthen ledger and settlement foundations
- Shape payments architecture for Australia, the UK and New Zealand
- Design reusable integrations for bank and loyalty partners
- Contribute to the next stage of card and payments strategy
- Mentor engineers through design reviews and technical guidance
Requirements
What you’ll need- At least 8 years of software engineering experience
- 4+ years building production payment systems at a fintech, payments company, acquirer, issuer, scheme or bank
- Track record of leading the design of significant payments work through to production
- Deep practical understanding of card payments and schemes, acquirers and payment providers
- Experience designing ledgers, settlement and reconciliation systems
- Strong backend engineering in a modern language on cloud infrastructure
- Working knowledge of PCI DSS and compliance-scope minimisation
- Experience leading incident response for payment systems
- Experience improving engineers through design reviews and mentoring
- Credibility with executives and external partners
- Fluency with AI development tools
- Familiarity with idempotency and duplicate handling
- Card issuing or issuer-processor experience
- Experience in high-growth fintech, neobank, BNPL or payments companies
- Familiarity with Australian, UK, New Zealand and US payments schemes
- Experience with serverless AWS and event-driven systems
- Exposure to fraud and risk platforms, QSAs or ISO 27001 programmes
- Experience in a two-sided marketplace or hospitality tech
- Experience migrating a live financial system
- Experience safely changing legacy code on a money path
- Experience architecting transaction authorisation under strict time limits
