About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising strategy aligned with FULCRUM’s strategic and financial priorities
  • Build and manage a robust pipeline across institutional philanthropy, individual giving, corporate partnerships, and other revenue streams
  • Diversify FULCRUM’s funding base beyond its current education-focused network
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward priority funders and prospects
  • Develop proposals, pitches, reports, and other funder materials
  • Build long-term relationships with current and prospective funders and external stakeholders
  • Leverage the Executive Director’s relationships, visibility, and national platform
  • Prepare organizational leaders for high-value funder interactions
  • Establish development infrastructure, processes, CRM usage, dashboards, reporting, grant calendars, and funder requirements
  • Track prospects, asks, commitments, stewardship, revenue projections, and cash-flow implications
  • Partner with Finance and Programs on proposals, budgets, reporting, and revenue projections
  • Develop and oversee an integrated communications strategy
  • Strengthen FULCRUM’s visibility, reputation, and fundraising efforts
  • Translate organizational work, impact, data, and learning into compelling stories
  • Oversee website, email, social media, reports, presentations, and other communications collateral
  • Manage communications consultants and external partners
  • Collaborate with Programs, Finance/Operations, organizational leadership, and external partners
  • Connect programmatic strategy and impact to fundraising and communications opportunities
  • Potentially build and manage additional development and communications capacity
  • Create a multi-year development strategy with revenue targets and a diversified prospect pipeline
  • Establish development operations covering CRM, prospect and grant management, revenue forecasting, stewardship, reporting, and cash-flow visibility
  • Assume meaningful ownership of development from the Executive Director
  • Integrate communications and development to convert awareness and engagement into relationships, partnerships, and philanthropic investment

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising, philanthropy, business development, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated success generating meaningful revenue from institutional and/or individual funders
  • Experience working with stakeholders across race, ethnicity, geographic location, and political affiliation
  • Experience developing or significantly strengthening a fundraising function
  • Experience creating a prospect pipeline and opening new funding relationships
  • Experience moving opportunities through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Exceptional relationship-building and fundraising abilities
  • Strong writing, storytelling, and communication skills
  • Ability to translate complex ideas, programmatic work, data, and impact into compelling messages
  • Experience using CRM and development data to manage prospects, forecast revenue, track commitments, inform strategy, and create accountability
  • Strategic communications leadership experience
  • Ability to manage external communications partners and vendors
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a visible founder/Executive Director and cross-functional teams
  • Entrepreneurial and self-directed leadership in a small, evolving organization
  • Commitment to literacy as a fundamental civil right
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
  • Ability to be in the office up to two days per week
