About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and coordinate the on-site Emergency Response Team as shift lead and Incident Commander
  • Serve as onsite Incident Commander for hazardous materials events and provide medical response coverage
  • Support and maintain site-based Hazardous Materials Technician-level response and first aid/first responder capability
  • Coordinate high-quality emergency response training and maintain equipment and readiness programs
  • Develop and continuously improve Emergency Response Procedures and hazard-specific annexes
  • Execute the on-site emergency preparedness and response plan, including pre-emergency planning, drills, and exercises
  • Implement emergency plans with on-site and local emergency organizations for evacuation, severe weather, shelter-in-place, hazardous material release, and medical scenarios
  • Participate in After Action Reviews and support corrective action tracking and closure
  • Inspect and maintain emergency response equipment, supplies, and facilities
  • Support fire code compliance and life safety system maintenance with building engineers
  • Support the annual fire safety inspection program and track observations and follow-up actions through closure
  • Prepare reports and records
  • Participate in Process Hazard Reviews, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, and Management of Change activities as an emergency response subject matter expert
  • Collaborate with HSE teammates on cross-functional initiatives, peer review, and HSE Operational Readiness milestones
  • Benchmark emergency response best practices across Lilly and externally, and escalate risks and issues to site HSE leaders
  • Support a 24/7/365 operation through 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of career or full-time emergency response experience in a fire department, industrial fire brigade, EMS agency, industrial fire department, or emergency response team
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple crews rather than within a single fixed team
  • Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; Lilly will not provide work authorization or visa sponsorship
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B or higher), in good standing and eligible for Indiana practice
  • Hazardous Materials Technician certification/training
  • Incident Command certification/training
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
  • Ability to meet respiratory protection medical clearance and fit testing requirements under 29 CFR 1910.134
  • Ability to perform emergency response physical demands, including PPE use, patient lifting and movement, and sustained work in high-heat-stress conditions
  • Valid driver's license
  • Organizational and record-keeping ability for training records, certification tracking, equipment inspection schedules, and drill documentation
  • Ability to work independently with limited daily supervision and manage workload alongside unpredictable response and coverage demands
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including radio communication under stress and technical writing for incident documentation, after-action reports, and procedures
  • CPR Instructor certification preferred
  • NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 preferred
  • Driver Operator — Pumper and/or Aerial preferred
  • Instructor I certification and emergency response training program experience preferred
  • Fire code or fire inspection experience preferred
  • Advanced EMT or Paramedic certification preferred
  • Experience across the full range of Incident Command System roles preferred
  • Experience delivering training to adult learners preferred
  • Pharmaceutical, chemical, or industrial manufacturing emergency response experience preferred
