About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead and grow the technology team across engineering, delivery, and operations
Own hiring, performance, development, and difficult personnel conversations
Manage through a manager as the function scales
Shape technical strategy with the SVP, including architecture, build-versus-buy, integrations, and platform direction
Translate product direction into shipped software through scoping, technical requirements, sequencing, and stakeholder commitments
Run delivery cadence, dependencies, and visibility across the technology function
Answer for the quality and outcomes of team deliverables
Set technical standards, review architecture, and implement mechanisms to catch production issues
Ship production code every week and carry hands-on technical work
Stand up new products and evolve existing products across news, subscriptions, identity, data, and events
Lead security across systems, access, third-party risk, and incident response
Own the content and data spine, including content modeling, CMS, APIs, and MCP services
Own environments, CI, previews, observability, and production operations
Own internal systems and tooling across CRM, events, email, subscriptions, and business data
Direct contractors and vendors and hold their work to company standards
Assess and launch sound AI-assisted work from non-engineers
Partner with editorial and business leadership to deliver features at newsroom pace
Report to the SVP, Design, Product and Technology and collaborate with them on technical strategy

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years leading technical teams
Experience managing engineers directly and through other managers
Experience hiring, developing, and exiting employees
Experience setting team standards and accountability for delivery
Regularly write and ship production code
Experience owning delivery, operations, vendor relationships, and stakeholder commitments
Ability to translate business intent into technical scope, cost, and impact
Real backend and infrastructure depth
Experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and modern tooling
Payload CMS on PostgreSQL, or equivalent depth in a headless, code-first CMS
Content modeling and API design with GraphQL and REST
Next.js and Astro with React islands
Application security, including authentication, authorization, secrets management, dependency hygiene, and least privilege
LLM-native workflow and judgment about appropriate AI use
Identity and payments: SSO/OIDC, Logto, Stripe, entitlements, and paywall logic
AWS: Lambda via OpenNext, S3, CloudFront, IAM, and RDS
Containers on Kubernetes
Security operations, including attack surface and asset inventory, decommissioning, access lifecycle, credential rotation, and forensic logging
Incident response involving containment, evidence, and reporting
Privacy and compliance knowledge, including GDPR and CCPA, consent and tracking, and data retention
PHP, MySQL, Python/FastAPI, Elasticsearch, and message brokers
Experience working where designers ship their own code
Experience directing contractors and vendors
Ability to communicate with editorial and commercial leaders
Media or publishing background is a strong plus, not a requirement
