About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform complex accounting activities and support month-end and year-end close activities
  • Develop and prepare journal entries, analyze and reconcile balance sheet accounts, prepare supporting schedules, and ensure accurate financial reporting and ledger maintenance
  • Prepare, review, and submit grant and contract invoices in compliance with contractual requirements, supporting documentation, and funding source restrictions
  • Prepare and review documentation and audit schedules for external auditors
  • Prepare and review documentation and schedules for 990 tax form preparation
  • Apply nonprofit and grant accounting principles and compliance requirements
  • Prepare grant revenue and receivable entries and develop grant and contract invoices
  • Partner with program staff to resolve invoice and payment issues
  • Research finance policies and accounting treatment papers
  • Recommend improvements to financial and accounting processes, reporting, procedures, and policies
  • Monitor the effectiveness of internal controls
  • Identify and resolve or escalate recurring errors, reconciliation issues, control concerns, and process improvement opportunities
  • Document workflows and maintain up-to-date desk-level procedures
  • Provide ad hoc reporting to internal and Program Management Contractor staff
  • Lead or participate in department projects and testing requirements
  • Provide vacation backup and peak-volume support to General Accountants
  • Collaborate with Finance peers to achieve team objectives
  • Interact with a diverse workforce in culturally diverse settings and groups
  • Perform other assigned job-related duties safely
  • Report to the Portland office at least quarterly for staff and in-person meetings
  • Report to the Accounting Manager - Finance
  • No supervisory responsibilities

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent educational experience required
  • CPA licensure or advanced business degree preferred
  • 5 years of accounting experience in a professional environment, preferably within a nonprofit organization, including experience with grant accounting, grant invoicing, compliance requirements, and financial reporting
  • Demonstrated experience managing or performing complex month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and audit support
  • Strong knowledge of SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex, and MS Office applications including Word, Outlook and PowerPoint, or equivalents
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Experience with Great Plains preferred
  • Experience writing and documenting business processes
  • Strong financial analytical skills
  • Proficiency as a systems user in database concepts
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with project management preferred
  • Ability to perform as a proficient, innovative, and multi-tasking accounting professional in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong customer service experience oriented toward supporting a diverse workforce or customer base
  • Ability to perform all normal office job functions safely and effectively
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and closely with others within the Finance team and cross-collaboratively within the organization
  • Successful completion of background and reference checks as a condition of employment
