About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Review and approve Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for critical live mechanical work
- Ensure technical accuracy, proper sequencing, redundancy protection, risk mitigation, and abort/back-out provisions
- Serve as a mechanical escalation point for operations during maintenance, non-routine work, and incident response
- Act as the mechanical subject matter expert for critical cooling infrastructure
- Provide operational guidance and support to data center operations teams
- Identify PUE and WUE optimization opportunities
- Guide site teams on mechanical and controls improvements using Sequence of Operation knowledge and industry best practices
- Develop and standardize operating procedures, engineering standards, and end-of-life asset management strategies
- Develop business cases for energy-efficiency and sellable-capacity projects
- Perform engineering evaluations, lifecycle cost analyses, and internal rate-of-return assessments
- Provide technical leadership through design review, construction, commissioning, and operational handover
- Partner with site operations and construction teams to validate system functionality and design intent
- Verify operational readiness before system acceptance
- Coach teams and share knowledge to advance operational excellence
- Support root-cause investigations and incident response
Requirements
What you’ll need- 7+ years’ experience in a critical 24/7 operational data center environment with emphasis on mechanical system operations
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and construction teams
- Experience developing and reviewing engineering documentation, including SOWs, design drawings, and technical reports
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to travel up to 25%
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience (preferred)
- 7+ years’ experience in mechanical/HVAC system design and project planning (preferred)
- Active Professional Engineering license (preferred)
- Familiarity with PUE, WUE, and sustainability standards (preferred)
- Working knowledge of plumbing and fire protection systems
- High-level understanding of electrical systems, including system topologies and electrical single-line diagrams
