About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Handle property claims within designated authority and exercise independent discretion or judgment
- Contact policyholders regarding property claims
- Conduct investigations, interview insureds and witnesses, inspect damage, and prepare estimates
- Evaluate coverage and make recommendations regarding claims
- Set and maintain adequate reserves
- Obtain and review reports, statements, records, and related materials
- Determine claim payments and issue checks or decline payment as required
- Document claim files and submit final reports for closure
- Identify subrogation situations and initiate appropriate action
- Service the assigned territory and bring claims to conclusion
- Interact with agents and district sales managers
- Handle property claims involving damage or coverage, including potentially litigated claims
- Negotiate with plaintiff attorneys or coordinate litigation with defense counsel as required
- Develop and apply knowledge of property-claim estimating practices and procedures
- Attend industry-related and other training sessions to stay current on policy changes, interpretations, and legislation
- Successfully complete Technical Learning Center Training within one year of hire
- Participate on the Catastrophe Team when required
- Attend a 15-week trainee program involving classroom, hands-on, and field training in Erie, Pennsylvania
Requirements
What you’ll need- Property Adjuster Trainee: High school diploma or equivalent required
- Property Adjuster I: High School Diploma or GED and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of ERIE-sponsored formal education; or Bachelor’s Degree required
- Property Adjuster II: High School Diploma or GED and five years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or Bachelor’s Degree and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required
- Physical ability and willingness to climb onto roofs and lift and climb ladders
- Willingness to work in inclement weather
- Willingness to work in undesirable indoor environments, such as houses exposed to flooding or fires
- Ability to work in confined spaces
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision
- Incumbent must live in the assigned territory unless a change is approved by the company
- Willingness to pursue and complete Technical Learning Center Training required
- Successful completion of AIC 33 and AIC 35 preferred
- Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record required
- Use of personal protective equipment required
- Ability to move over 50 lbs using lifting aide equipment
- Regular and predictable attendance is required
- Position requires catastrophe duty, including possible short-notice travel to other locations for periods exceeding two consecutive weeks
