About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Exercise independent discretion or judgment in handling all types of property claims
- Assist or act on behalf of the claims supervisor when required
- Conduct investigations and interviews
- Inspect damage by driving to damage sites within the assigned territory or elsewhere as required
- Prepare estimates and make recommendations
- Handle coverage questions and litigation
- Set and maintain reserves
- Review reports and related materials
- Direct experts
- Determine coverage and claim value
- Issue or decline payment
- Negotiate claims with plaintiff attorneys when necessary
- Document claim files and submit reports for closure
- Recognize subrogation situations and initiate appropriate action
- Service the assigned territory and bring claims to conclusion
- Interact with agents and district sales managers
- Represent the company at legal proceedings when required
- Complete industry-related training and stay informed on policy changes, interpretation, and legislation
- Assist in training new claims adjusters
- Participate on the Catastrophe Team when required
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance
Requirements
What you’ll need- Property Adjuster Trainee: High school diploma or equivalent required
- Property Adjuster I: High School Diploma or GED and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of ERIE sponsored formal education; or Bachelor’s Degree required
- Property Adjuster II: High School Diploma or GED and five years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or Bachelor’s Degree and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required
- Incumbent must live in the territory assigned unless a change is approved by the company
- Ability to drive/travel regularly within the assigned territory
- Must serve on catastrophe duty, including possible short-notice travel to other locations for periods exceeding two consecutive weeks
- Willingness to pursue and complete Technical Learning Center Training required
- Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record required
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
- Ability to move over 50 lbs using lifting aide equipment
- Ability to climb/access heights
- Frequent driving
- Manual keying/data entry/computer use
- Successful completion of AIC 33 and AIC 35 preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred for Property Adjuster Trainee
