About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Exercise independent discretion or judgment in handling property claims within designated authority
  • Service the assigned territory and bring assigned claims to conclusion
  • Contact policyholders regarding property claims
  • Conduct investigations, interview insureds and witnesses, inspect damage, and prepare estimates
  • Evaluate and make recommendations regarding claim coverage
  • Set and maintain adequate reserves
  • Obtain and review reports, statements, records, and related materials
  • Evaluate information to determine coverage and total claim value
  • Determine payments and issue checks or decline payment as required
  • Document claim files and submit final reports for closure
  • Identify subrogation situations and initiate appropriate action
  • Interact with agents and district sales managers
  • Handle claims involving damage or coverage issues
  • Handle litigated claims, including negotiating with plaintiff attorneys or coordinating litigation with defense counsel
  • Develop and apply knowledge of property-claim estimating practices and procedures
  • Attend industry-related and other training sessions on policy changes, interpretation, and legislation
  • Successfully complete Technical Learning Center Training within one year of hire
  • Participate on the Catastrophe Team when required
  • Complete a 15-week Property Adjuster Trainee program with classroom, hands-on, and field training in Erie, Pennsylvania and the branch office

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Property Adjuster Trainee: High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Property Adjuster I: High School Diploma or GED and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of ERIE sponsored formal education; or Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Property Adjuster II: High School Diploma or GED and five years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or Bachelor’s Degree and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required
  • Incumbent must live in the territory assigned unless a change is approved by the company
  • Ability to drive/travel regularly within the assigned territory
  • Position requires catastrophe duty, including possible short-notice travel to other locations for periods exceeding two consecutive weeks
  • Willingness to pursue and complete Technical Learning Center Training required
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required
  • Ability to move over 50 lbs using lifting aide equipment
  • Ability to climb/access heights
  • Regular and predictable attendance required
  • Bachelor's degree preferred for Property Adjuster Trainee
  • Successful completion of AIC 33 and AIC 35 preferred
