About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Exercise independent discretion or judgment in handling property claims within designated authority
- Service the assigned territory and bring assigned claims to conclusion
- Contact policyholders regarding property claims
- Conduct investigations, interview insureds and witnesses, inspect damage and prepare estimates
- Evaluate and make recommendations regarding claim coverage
- Handle property claims within designated authority
- Set and maintain adequate reserves
- Obtain and review reports, statements, records and related materials
- Evaluate information to determine coverage and total claim value
- Determine payments and issue checks or decline payment as required
- Document claim files and submit final reports for closure
- Identify subrogation situations and initiate appropriate action
- Interact with agents and district sales managers
- Handle claims involving damage or coverage, including potentially litigated claims
- Negotiate with plaintiff attorneys or coordinate litigation with defense counsel as required
- Develop and apply knowledge of property-claim estimating practices and procedures
- Attend industry-related and other training sessions to remain current on policy changes, interpretation and legislation
- Successfully complete Technical Learning Center Training within one year of hire
- Participate on the Catastrophe Team when required
Requirements
What you’ll need- Property Adjuster Trainee: High school diploma or equivalent required
- Property Adjuster I: High School Diploma or GED and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of ERIE sponsored formal education; or Bachelor’s Degree required
- Property Adjuster II: High School Diploma or GED and five years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or Bachelor’s Degree and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required
- Incumbent must live in the territory assigned unless a change is approved by the company
- Ability to drive/travel regularly within the assigned territory
- Position requires catastrophe duty, which may include travel on short notice to other locations for periods in excess of two consecutive weeks
- Willingness to pursue and complete Technical Learning Center Training required
- Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record required
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
- Ability to move over 50 lbs using lifting aide equipment
- Ability to climb/access heights
- Regular and predictable attendance required
- Successful completion of AIC 33 and AIC 35 preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred for Property Adjuster Trainee
