About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Exercise independent discretion or judgment in handling property claims within designated authority
- Service the assigned territory and bring claims to conclusion
- Contact policyholders regarding property claims
- Conduct investigations and interview insureds and witnesses
- Inspect damage and prepare estimates
- Evaluate claims coverage and make coverage recommendations
- Handle claims within designated authority; set and maintain adequate reserves
- Obtain and review reports, statements, records, and related materials
- Determine claim payments and issue checks or decline payment as required
- Document claim files and submit final reports for closure
- Identify subrogation situations and initiate appropriate action
- Interact with agents and district sales managers
- Handle claims involving damage or coverage; potentially negotiate with plaintiff attorneys or coordinate litigation with defense counsel
- Develop and apply knowledge of property-claim estimating practices and procedures
- Attend industry-related and other training sessions on policy changes, interpretation, and legislation
- Successfully complete Technical Learning Center Training within one year of hire
- Participate on the Catastrophe Team when required
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent required for Property Adjuster Trainee
- Bachelor’s degree preferred for Property Adjuster Trainee
- Property Adjuster I: High School Diploma or GED and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of ERIE sponsored formal education; or Bachelor’s Degree required
- Property Adjuster II: High School Diploma or GED and five years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or Bachelor’s Degree and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required
- Must live in the assigned territory unless a change is approved by the company
- Ability to drive/travel regularly within the assigned territory
- Must serve on catastrophe duty, including possible short-notice travel to other locations for periods exceeding two consecutive weeks
- Willingness to pursue and complete Technical Learning Center Training required
- Successful completion of AIC 33 and AIC 35 preferred
- Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record required
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
- Ability to move over 50 lbs using lifting aid equipment
- Ability to climb/access heights
- Frequent driving, lifting/moving, and computer/data-entry activities
