About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead teams designing, building, and operating cloud-native applications, APIs, and middleware/data services for Extreme Networks' cloud networking platform
- Own the technical strategy, architecture, and execution roadmap for cloud applications and data services
- Lead, hire, and develop multiple engineering teams, including managers and individual contributors
- Set team goals, career paths, and performance expectations
- Partner with Product Management and the VP of Cloud Networking Engineering to translate customer and business requirements into a prioritized technical roadmap
- Drive code quality, CI/CD, test automation, observability, and secure software development practices
- Ensure scalability, availability, and performance across multi-tenant, multi-region cloud environments
- Collaborate with Platform Engineering, SRE/Cloud Operations, Security, and Support on incident response, capacity planning, and SLOs
- Evolve middleware and data-services architecture, including APIs, messaging, event streaming, and data pipelines
- Manage departmental budget, vendor/tooling decisions, and resource planning
- Represent Software Applications Engineering in executive reviews, planning cycles, and cross-organizational initiatives
- Communicate status, risks, and trade-offs to senior leadership
- Champion Agile/Scrum or similar delivery practices and continuous improvement
- Report to the Vice President, Cloud Networking Engineering
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience
- 5+ years in engineering leadership/management roles overseeing multiple teams
- Experience building and operating cloud-native applications on AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Experience with microservices, Docker/Kubernetes containers, and serverless technologies
- Strong background in REST/gRPC APIs, message queues/event streaming such as Kafka, and SQL/NoSQL data technologies
- Ability to lead organizational change, manage competing priorities, and deliver complex cross-team initiatives on schedule
- Experience partnering with Product Management on roadmap definition and communicating technical strategy to executive stakeholders
- Understanding of secure software development practices, CI/CD pipelines, and modern observability/monitoring tooling
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Preferred: experience in networking, cloud networking, or infrastructure software industry
- Preferred: Master's degree in a relevant technical field or MBA
- Preferred: experience scaling engineering organizations during rapid growth
- Preferred: familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS architecture, subscription/licensing models, and enterprise-grade security/compliance requirements
- Preferred: exposure to AIOps, telemetry/analytics platforms, or large-scale data engineering
- Occasional travel up to 10–15%
- Role is based in the United States and hybrid in Salem, New Hampshire
