About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage longer-duration and complex occupational and non-occupational disability files from initiation to resolution
  • Manage STD, LTD, workplace injury, alcohol- and drug-related, accommodation, modified work, and medical leave cases
  • Provide consultation and education on disability processes and relevant legislation
  • Develop, update, and recommend improvements to procedures, policies, and best practices
  • Participate in and lead project work
  • Collaborate with the STD/LTD administrator on plan provisions and operating guidelines
  • Maintain relationships with provincial workers’ compensation bodies and ensure legislative compliance
  • Provide expert disability-related consultation to HR, Environment, Health & Safety, Operations, and other partners
  • Apply privacy legislation and manage confidential information appropriately
  • Resolve disability files while balancing stakeholder and organizational needs
  • Provide fiscally responsible recommendations and assess financial impacts
  • Assess the need, effectiveness, and cost-benefit of medical and worksite assessments
  • Lead difficult conversations and drive solutions
  • Synthesize information from multiple sources and make informed recommendations
  • Manage leave and return-to-work programs
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and compliant case files
  • Build relationships with vendors, monitor contract compliance, and escalate concerns

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • Minimum 7 years of broad disability management experience
  • Professional designation and/or industry-specific training
  • Experience in a unionized environment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of disability management principles and best practices
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and internal systems
  • Strong file-management skills, ensuring accurate, confidential, and secure documentation
  • Ability to interpret medical reporting related to work restrictions and develop medical questionnaires
  • Ability to identify and confirm work-related functional limitations or restrictions and incorporate them into return-to-work plans
  • Coaching, training, and mentoring skills
  • Conflict resolution skills with a focus on interest-based outcomes
  • Ability to provide information to LR/Legal and prepare written responses for grievances, WCB claim appeals/cost-relief requests, and external information requests
  • Understanding of employee health, early intervention initiatives, and modified work opportunities
  • Knowledge of Standard Operating Guidelines, STD plan administration, WCB legislation and procedures, and specialized services such as GreenShield
  • Knowledge of Alcohol and Drug Policy, testing requirements, and substance-use-related disability files
  • Understanding of leave and disability processes and external service providers
  • Strong understanding of HR, Environment, Health & Safety, line management, and employee roles
  • Ability to develop and maintain credible stakeholder and vendor relationships
  • Advanced communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and analytical abilities
  • Ability to review, develop, and continuously improve best practices, procedures, and policies
  • Experience contributing to or leading project work
