About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Set Firecrawl's legal strategy and risk posture for web crawling, publisher opt-outs, data provenance, AI training data, agents, and machine-generated output
  • Defend the company's web-data-access position in customer diligence, negotiations, regulatory matters, and court proceedings
  • Run disputes, demand letters, and pre-litigation strategy, using outside counsel when appropriate
  • Own corporate and board legal, including financings, governance, cap table, equity plans, board materials, minutes, and corporate hygiene
  • Act as corporate secretary
  • Set commercial legal posture, including risk allocation, indemnities, data provenance, fallback positions, and approval thresholds
  • Lead privacy, security, and compliance strategy with the CTO, including GDPR, CCPA, EU AI Act, state AI laws, SOC 2, sanctions, and export issues
  • Steward open-source licensing, contributor terms, trademark protection, and project/product boundaries
  • Advise People and Operations on employment, contractor, EOR/PEO, IP assignment, classification, and immigration matters
  • Build and lead the legal team, including hiring, leveling, development, legal operations, and outside-counsel management
  • Represent Firecrawl in policy discussions with industry coalitions, regulators, legislators, and amicus opportunities
  • Handle insurance, government inquiries, communications review, and other legal matters
  • Report to the CEO and advise founders on financings, board matters, and legal-risk decisions

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 12+ years of legal experience
  • Experience running or helping run legal in-house at a venture-backed technology company
  • Experience covering corporate, financings, governance, commercial, product, data, and IP law
  • Point of view and experience regarding web data, AI, and copyright
  • Experience handling demand letters, regulatory inquiries, disputes, or high-stakes legal matters
  • Experience building or running a small legal team
  • Experience managing outside counsel to a budget
  • Heavy, practical use of AI in legal practice
  • Membership in good standing in at least one US state bar
  • California bar membership or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • J.D. from a T14 law school or comparable academic credentials preferred
  • Training at an Am Law 100 or comparably sophisticated firm preferred
  • In-house experience at a fast-scaling company preferred
  • Exposure to data licensing, privacy, IP, open source, or data-access disputes is a strong plus
