About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Direct coverage of the interaction among the executive, judicial and legislative branches
- Generate distinctive story ideas and identify trends
- Use data and produce content for multiple platforms, including CQ and Roll Call
- Lead and inspire reporters to produce high-impact, enterprising stories about the White House, Congress, the judicial branch, and influential groups and advocates
- Manage a team of editors and reporters focused on the three branches of the federal government and political campaigns
- Help determine content for CQ Magazine, newsletters, and CQ website
- Help determine content and the plan for each Roll Call newspaper print edition, website, and newsletter
- Coordinate with team leaders and assignment editors to carry out the editorial vision across CQ Roll Call platforms
- Coordinate with managing editors on operations, production, and content needs
- Provide regular constructive feedback, coaching, and mentoring to editors and staff writers
- Write and perform second edits for other team coverage as needed
- Edit Roll Call columnists and newsletters as needed
- Moderate panel discussions, webinars, newsroom and corporate events, and CQ Roll Call podcasts
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experienced journalist
- All applicants must submit four (4) published writing samples from newspapers, news websites or news magazines demonstrating reporting and writing ability
- Experience working in a newsroom in an editor role
- Knowledge of CQ and Roll Call systems and processes
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- 10+ years of work experience in daily journalism, preferably focused on policy and political stories about the federal government
- Increasing levels of responsibility including 3+ years in management roles
- Comfortable digging into White House and congressional news and sourcing
- Able to follow court cases with significant political and policy implications
- Employment eligibility verification required through E-Verify
