About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and operate the internal application platform for creating and deploying AI-generated applications
  • Provide governed application access to the data warehouse and shared PostgreSQL cluster
  • Build and operate a central knowledge platform over unstructured and structured data
  • Own retrieval quality through semantic and hybrid search, re-ranking, chunking, classification, permissions, and evaluation sets
  • Design and deploy shared MCP infrastructure with authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and audit logging
  • Build MCP servers for applications, software services, and selected external tools
  • Evaluate model selection and cost, including open-source, open-weight, and frontier models
  • Reduce token usage through context management, caching, and model routing
  • Build agent orchestration with multi-agent workflows, long-running loops, checkpoints, human review gates, and automated evaluation
  • Partner with R&D, battery design, manufacturing, costing, and root cause analysis teams to automate repeatable work
  • Instrument the platform with tracing, evaluation, usage, and cost attribution
  • Stand up AWS infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code using Pulumi and/or Terraform
  • Help establish a company-wide skills and plugin marketplace with AI-policy vetting and security scanning
  • Advise on AI governance and automate policy execution
  • Raise engineering standards through design docs, RFCs, code review, mentorship, and technical influence

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a related field
  • 7+ years of software or data engineering experience, including building and operating production platforms or services that other engineers depend on
  • Strong production programming in Python and Go
  • Experience building APIs and backend services
  • Hands-on experience building LLM-powered systems in production, including retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, vector and hybrid search, re-ranking, and structured-data access through text-to-SQL or semantic layers
  • Experience with agent frameworks, tool calling, the Model Context Protocol, and workflow orchestration or state-machine frameworks such as LangGraph, Temporal, or Dagster
  • Experience building evaluation sets and harnesses for LLM systems and measuring quality, latency, and cost across model providers, including open-weight models
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and a cloud data warehouse
  • Experience with AWS, containers, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code with Pulumi and/or Terraform
  • Working knowledge of platform and AI security, including OAuth/OIDC, secrets management, sandboxed execution, tenant isolation, supply-chain scanning, prompt injection, and data exfiltration risks
  • Track record of building internal platforms adopted by other teams
  • Track record of independently leading novel solutions through technical design docs and RFCs
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, including with scientists, engineers, and operators who aren't software developers
  • Comfort participating in an on-call rotation
  • Ability to work onsite at the listed work location at least 3 days per week
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Nice to have: React and design-system experience; Snowflake or Databricks; serving open-weight models; API or AI gateway experience; AI governance or compliance frameworks; background in battery, energy, manufacturing, or other physical-systems data
