About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Analyze existing System/36 applications, job streams, menus, and screen flows
- Convert OCL programs and processes to IBM i Control Language (CL)
- Convert RPG II applications to RPG IV / ILE RPG while preserving business functionality and application integrity
- Review and remediate converted code to improve maintainability, performance, and compliance with modernization standards
- Perform unit testing, integration testing, and support user acceptance testing activities
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues identified during remediation and testing
- Modernize System/36 screens and menu structures
- Document application functionality, conversion approaches, remediation activities, and testing results
- Collaborate with technical teams, business stakeholders, and quality assurance resources
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to technical best practices and knowledge transfer activities
- Complete and document OCL-to-CL and RPG II-to-RPG IV / ILE RPG conversion activities
- Produce technical documentation and knowledge transfer materials
- Contribute to successful modernization objectives
Requirements
What you’ll need- Strong experience working in IBM System/36 environments
- Extensive experience with Operational Control Language (OCL)
- Strong RPG II development and maintenance experience
- Hands-on experience converting OCL to IBM i Control Language (CL)
- Hands-on experience converting RPG II applications to RPG IV / ILE RPG
- Experience with IBM i application modernization initiatives
- Strong understanding of batch processing, job scheduling, and legacy application architectures
- Experience performing conversion remediation and code optimization activities
- Experience planning and executing conversion-related testing
- Experience with screen and menu conversion and modernization
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to understand and translate complex legacy business logic into modern IBM i solutions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong documentation and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and within a collaborative project team environment
- 7+ years of IBM midrange development experience
- 5+ years of System/36 development and support experience
- Demonstrated experience with application conversion and modernization initiatives
- Proven track record delivering RPG and OCL conversion projects in IBM i environments
- Experience using automated code conversion tools and performing post-conversion remediation (preferred)
- Experience modernizing large-scale IBM i applications in distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, or ERP environments (preferred)
- Familiarity with IBM i development tools, source control, and change management processes (preferred)
- Experience participating in legacy application transformation and modernization programs (preferred)
