About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Analyze existing System/36 applications, job streams, menus, and screen flows
- Convert OCL programs and processes to CL
- Convert RPG II programs to RPG IV / ILE RPG while preserving business logic and application integrity
- Review and remediate converted code to improve maintainability, performance, and compliance
- Perform unit and integration testing and support user acceptance testing (UAT) activities
- Investigate, diagnose, and resolve defects
- Modernize System/36 screens and menu architecture
- Document application behavior, conversion strategies, fixes, and test results
- Collaborate with technical teams, business stakeholders, and quality assurance specialists
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to technical best practices and knowledge transfer
- Complete conversions, remediate, optimize, and validate converted applications
- Execute and document test campaigns
- Prepare technical documentation and develop knowledge transfer materials
- Ensure the modernization program's delivery objectives are met
Requirements
What you’ll need- Strong hands-on experience with IBM System/36 environments
- Extensive experience with OCL (Operational Control Language)
- Strong experience developing and maintaining RPG II applications
- Hands-on experience converting OCL to CL
- Hands-on experience converting RPG II applications to RPG IV / ILE RPG
- Experience participating in IBM i application modernization initiatives
- In-depth knowledge of batch processing, job queue management, and legacy application architectures
- Experience remediating code after conversion and optimizing performance
- Experience planning and executing conversion-related test protocols
- Experience converting and modernizing screens and menus
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to understand complex legacy business logic and translate it into modern IBM i solutions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong technical documentation and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently while integrating effectively into a project team
- 7+ years of IBM midrange systems development experience
- 5+ years of System/36 development and support experience
- Demonstrated experience with application conversion and modernization projects
- Proven track record of delivering RPG and OCL conversion projects in IBM i environments
