About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Report to the Control & Protection System Application Manager
  • Design Control and Protection functions for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes
  • Study existing project designs and functionalities in MATLAB/Simulink and transfer them to PSCAD across the full delivery lifecycle
  • Design and maintain plant models
  • Create and verify MATLAB models
  • Create test harnesses for model conversion
  • Write model guides and evaluate models in PSCAD
  • Support tendering, operations, contractual, and after-sales needs
  • Define control system requirements
  • Develop HVDC systems in electromagnetic transient tools such as PSCAD and EMTP-RV
  • Perform plant modelling and verification in MATLAB, PSCAD, and other simulation tools
  • Conduct Dynamic Performance Studies and other design studies using offline and online simulation tools
  • Tune control and protection parameters to meet customer grid stability criteria
  • Convert MATLAB Simulink algorithms to PSCAD models
  • Improve algorithms and strategies for power fault recovery or instability issues during DPS studies
  • Develop strategies for control, protection, and sequencing when required
  • Propose tools, methods, and process improvements for the control application team
  • Promote reuse of solutions while improving quality and reliability and reducing delivery timelines and costs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Engineering degree or equivalent including power systems and power electronics subjects, or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in HVDC business
  • Strong sense of urgency and ability to identify and manage technical risks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience creating and presenting technical reports and responding to clients’ technical questions
  • Ability to understand and communicate customer requirements, own technical discussions with customers, and develop client relationships
  • Competence in functional characteristics of power systems and understanding of interactions between AC and HVDC systems
  • Knowledge of HVDC control, protection, and sequencing strategy
  • Experience with PSCAD and MATLAB-SIMULINK simulation tools
  • Ability to work to deadlines under pressure while maintaining safety, quality, and engineering integrity
  • Flexibility with working hours and willingness to travel globally
  • Desired: knowledge of power system analysis and stability
  • Desired: experience with Power Factory, PSS/E, ETAP, EMTDC RV, etc.
  • Desired: process improvement or RCA experience or certification
  • Desired: technical leadership experience
  • Desired: experience working in the HVDC industry
