About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design and deliver complex protection solutions for generation, transmission, and distribution systems for electrical utilities and industrial clients
  • Participate in the design and development of microgrid solutions, including power flow optimization and dispatching algorithms
  • Perform engineering studies and analyses, including short circuit, load flow, ground grid, arc-flash, and protective device coordination studies
  • Perform power system studies and calculations, including CT/VT adequacy checks and relay settings
  • Create relay setting files with programming of protection and control elements, control logic, and communications settings for GE and third-party protective relays
  • Test customized protection and control solutions in-house and at customer installations
  • Model and conduct power system simulations using RTDS simulator or equivalent
  • Provide factory acceptance test plans and testing services to validate protection designs for customer witnessing
  • Plan site acceptance tests and provide field support through commissioning of new applications
  • Assist software tool development to automate the engineering process internally and with utility partners
  • Participate in project meetings with project managers and customers on technical discussions
  • Travel up to 20–40% depending on projects

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering required; Master's or higher preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in protection, control, and automation applications
  • Very good understanding of power system applications and analysis
  • Excellent understanding of power systems phenomena in transmission and distribution systems
  • Understanding of power system protection relays, automation, control, and communication protocols
  • Technical skills to execute projects and write SOW proposals
  • Willingness and ability to work across time zones to support global customers if required
  • Experience with study software and power system tools such as Mathcad, MATLAB, PSSE, PSCAD, Power Factory, ASPEN, and CAPE
  • Understanding of communication system protocols and architectures in the electric power industry, including DNP3, MODBUS, IEC61850, and OpenFMB
  • Experience with RTDS or Opal Simulation Platforms
  • Experience with transmission, distribution, and smart grid standards
  • Knowledge or field experience with system commissioning and testing
  • Experience with advanced automation solutions such as microgrids and remedial action schemes
  • Experience with IEC 61131-3 PLC programming languages
  • Project management experience
